In case you weren’t aware, the movie is based on the true story of Richard Jewell, a security guard during the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games who discovered a bomb and tried to evacuate the grounds before it would detonate. However, as the police started investigating the drama they started to realize that Jewell could be a suspect and, in fact, responsible for entire the bomb hoax. The general reviews for the film are mixed-to-positive with many journalistic quarters having qualms over the film’s negative depiction of the media and the FBI....

“Elvis” earned another $5.3 million on its second Friday for a likely $22 million holiday weekend. That’ll push the Baz Luhrmann-directed film past $75 million domestic by Monday or Tuesday night. Luhrmann’s film cost around $85 million and, if projections stick, will make around $110 million by the end of its domestic run. Overseas the film is looking at around $115-$120 million globally. That means it could crack the $200 million mark worldwide....

Clayton Davis over at Variety has some very positive news about Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Licorice Pizza.” It was actually screened for a very few select critics last week: “Paul Thomas Anderson wrote “Licorice Pizza,” along with directing and producing the film with Sara Murphy. The project, distributed by United Artists Releasing, was backed by MGM, in association with Bron Creative and Anderson’s Ghoulardi Film Company, and screened for select critics and journalists last week....

I have been a fan of Eggers’ filmmaking ever since I saw “The Witch” at Sundance more than 7 years ago. He’s the real deal, even if I thought “The Lighthouse,” a decently watchable film, was a tad beneath his skills as a filmmaker. “The Northman,” Eggers’ upcoming third film, finished production is early 2021. It stars Nicole Kidman, Alexander Skarsgård, Anya Taylor-Joy, Bill Skarsgård, and Willem Dafoe. A few test screenings have happened around the country already....

Schrader was in movie-review-mode this weekend as he went to post his negative take on Clint Eastwood’s just-released “Cry Macho.” A film much-maligned by critics and audiences alike, and which even Eastwood apologists have admitted is subpar: “I can appreciate the inclination to give Clint Eastwood a pass but has an important American director made a film as bad as Cry Macho since Howard Hawks’ Man’s Favorite Spot? Director Spike Jonze (“Being John Malkovich,” “Her,” “Adaptation”) released this surprise two-minute short film tited “The New Normal.” The film is a partnership with the cannabis company MedMen and finds Jonze advocating for marijuana legalization. Per the synopsis from MedMen: “The commercial chronicles society’s evolving perceptions of the plant, from pre-prohibition to the modern industry of today. While looking back through America’s history, from George Washington’s hemp farm, to Reefer Madness propaganda, ‘The New Normal’ takes the audience on a journey through the injustices of the past and a hopeful view for the future....

Paris Match published an exclusive photo of Allen on the set of his latest Paris-based French-Language film. The ingredients are all there for a Cannes debut, but will Fremaux bite? The French outlet had this to say about the potential Cannes appearance: Fremaux has defended both Polanski and Allen in the past, but not without getting backlash for it. Polanski’s “The Palace” is currently in post-production, having moved its January release date in Italy to a TBD slot....

The latest addition to this current trend of arty dread—often slow, but freakish, psychologically traumatizing and formally audacious— is Veronika Franz and Severin Fiara‘s “The Lodge,” a deliberately quiet but meaty dissection of the complexities of motherhood and even faith, which continues many of the same themes the directing duo employed to chilling effect with their 2015 breakout “Goodnight Mommy.” Franz and Fiara seem to be fascinated by the thorny relationship between mother and child and, but this time, “The Lodge” tackles the complicated and emotionally delicate and fraught area of step-motherhood and surrogates, while making disquieting comments on religion and beliefs....
