The sequel, ‘Glass Onion,’ is far more entertaining. Why? Because, unlike the original, it doesn’t take itself as seriously. It’s a rousing romp that shoots darts at its specific targets and is never boring. It helps that Rian Johnson brings some real directorial energy to the whole thing. Now, does “Glass Onion” have a shot at nabbing a Best Picture nomination? It’s being released tomorrow by Netflix in 600 theaters....

Lee’s upcoming film is another major studio project for the Taiwanese-born filmmaker. It stars Will Smith and will be using Industrial Light and Magic “de-aging” on Smith. It doesn’t seem like Lee has regained his artistic footing with “Gemini Man.” A real shame, if you ask me, as American cinema could sure use him at the summit of his powers right about now. Maybe opportunities for actual humane drama in the industry have just rendered him to become a paycheck guy....

“Aline” looks like a joke on-paper, but Lemercier invests so much irresistible energy to her film, which she wrote, directed and starred in, that the love she infuses in every frame turns out to be damn-near infectious. Finley’s film was finally bought by HBO for an astounding $16.5million [via Deadline]. This officially made it ineligible for Oscar contention since it would be premiering on television. A real shame if you ask me since Jackman gives the performance of his career. Is this how dour the state of the industry is now? One of the best movies of the Spring, maybe even the year, will not see the light of day in theaters?...

There is an October 28th press screening for “Dark Waters” happening in Los Angeles. Buzz for the film has been fairly tame. “Dark Waters,” inspired by a true story, centers around Robert Bilott, played by Mark Ruffalo, who’s environmental suit against Dupont Company exposed a decades-long history of chemical pollution. An excellent cast has been assembled for the film. Anne Hathaway, Tim Robbins, and Ruffalo will be joined by a cast which includes Bill Camp, Victor Garber, Mare Winningham, William Jackson Harper, and Bill Pullman....
