This kind of self-seriousness on the part of the A-list in California is why much of America is tuning out of these types of awards shows. Take, for example, the meltdown that occurred within the media and Twitter when the late —recently sainted— Chadwick Boseman lost the Best Actor Oscar to Anthony Hopkins....

I’m not saying it’s a bad movie, the reviews are still actually pretty good. I liked Del Toro’s film when I saw it in mid-November, but I found that it didn’t need the useless musical numbers. nor did some of the storytelling work as well as it should have. It’s now sitting at 82 on Metacritic. Del Toro’s film is still being seen as the Animated frontrunner, as it should be, but now the race is tighter and films like “Turning Red” and “Marcel the Shell With the Shoes On” don’t seem like such long shots after all....

However, during the last weekend of Sundance, I had heard rumblings that a movie called “Relic” may have been the best horror title of the 2020 fest. I managed to find a publicist, on a Saturday no less, to sneak me into the final screening of this Australian-American horror movie. Although not in the same league as the very best of the genre, Natalie Erika James’ directorial debut will please plenty of genre fans this summer, hungry for new fare during the COVID-19 lockdown....

Expertly combining archival footage and interviews, the film operates as a fitting tribute to the racing legend, as it takes viewers through the key moments in his racing and personal lives. Rather than attempting to paint a narrative or feed any existing one as to who the ‘real’ Schumacher was, the film takes the absolute right approach, allowing his family, friends (and sometimes foes) to provide detail, backstory, and fresh insights into some of Schumacher’s greatest and toughest moments....

Amber is obsessed with the restaurant chain’s wealthy and charismatic owner, and manages to “frequent” him. Obsession turns into disappointment, and a sudden friendship with … Aubrey Plaza? Amidst the goofy nightime partying, Baena also adds in a murder-mystery for good measure. “Spin Me Round” is purposefully eccentric, revelling in its absurdities, ultimately crossing a line of hipster tweee that nixes the enjoyment. Not even the always-reliable Plaza can save this one....

The visual style and grisly violence would influence a whole set of new young horror filmmakers for the next two decades to come. However, after a number of unnecessary sequels drove the concept into the ground, but don’t tell that to Chris Rock, who is trying to revive the franchise with his own reboot....

The release calendar was shaken to its core today when Disney announced a slew of changes to its own calendar, including the total removal of Niki Caro’s “Mulan” and Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch.” Also, Ridley Scott’s Ben Affleck and Matt Damon-starring “The Last Duel,” which had its production halted this past March due to the pandemic, has been moved from a December release to an October 2021 date. Yikes....

Jeff Nathanson, the writer behind the misbegotten 2019 “Lion King,” is back to script the sequel. The 2019 film, directed by Jon Favreau, was horrendously bland, there was none of the excitement and sense of adventure of the original 1994 animated classic. Of course, with Jenkins at the helm of the sequel, there is the slight chance that something special could arise, but I doubt it. Regardless, this is, technically speaking, the definition of “selling out,” but do you actually blame Jenkins for signing on?...

It’s exactly what I expected. A flat looking but, potentially, immersive family drama. You can kind of see what this will be all about. There’s none of the mind-bending parallel realities of “The Father.” This is a drama that will rely heavily on emotional gut punches. I’m perfectly fine with that, it’s definitely “Oscar-bait”. You can also now understand why some of the pickier fests (Telluride, NYFF) may have possibly passed up on it....

Variety has now confirmed Fincher as director, they spoke with producers Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, who revealed that filming is now due to begin in June 2019. Fincher is currently directing the second season of his Netflix series “Mindhunter” and Pitt is in Los Angeles shooting Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Thus, the reason for the delays. Fincher hasn’t directed a movie since 2014’s “Gone Girl....
