Fernando Meirelles’ “The Two Popes” is a wise and intelligent examination of that meeting. It feels as timely as ever to release this movie due to the current set of debates regarding conservative vs progressive mindsets. Meirelles, who directed the modern gangster classic City of God, never lets Anthony McCarten’s wordy screenplay interfere with his stunning visual schema. However, I did wish for more conversation and less lazy reliance on a long flashback sequence, which recounts the story of Francis’ youth from hopeless romantic to the most progressively-minded high priest at the Vatican....

The film premiered at AFI this past week to positive reviews. There’s a playfulness throughout the picture that really earns your attention. There’s also a slew of Broadway legends that appear in and out; Bernadette Peters and Brian Stokes Mitchell to Joel Grey, Bebe Neuwirth, and Chita Rivera, among many more. However, I can’t help but think that the Swedish auteur just isn’t able to stick the landing in his films. In “Triangle of Sadness,” Ostlund again tackles gender and socio-political games. Briefly, it’s about a group of a dozen or so millionaires who decide to spend their vacation on a cruise yacht....

The unbelievable strangeness inherent in truth has made for some incredibly destabilizing documentaries about the blurred lines of fact and fiction. Films like “Dear Zachary,” “Catfish,” “Exit Through The Gift Shop”’ and “The Imposter” all blow themselves up in the middle all featuring “oh shit!”-like twists so disarming, so surprising they make one question the very reality and existence of what you’ve been watching. So, prepare to be fooled, thrilled and surprised with a new classic of this upending subgenre with “Untitled Amazing Johnathan Documentary,” a doc that uses the integral subject of magic and artifice to create a riveting meta-story about the illusory nature of truth, trust and the self-examining questioning of what you thought to be real....

‘Buzzsaw’ is supposed to premiere on Netflix February 1st. This could mean one of two things a) Netflix does not believe it will be remembered come awards consideration next December but still think they have a solid movie here or b) they are trying to just dump it, with absolutely no confidence in it, thus the early year release. I believe it could be the former. The bigger story to me, however, is that this is yet another major push to Driver’s rising star. In August Martin Scorsese called Driver “the best actor of his generation.” Has it come to that? Are we at that stage where we can call him that? I personally don’t think so, but he sure is on his way to becoming just that. Over the past decade, Driver has worked with Martin Scorsese, Joel Coen, Noah Baumbach, Jim Jarmusch, Clint Eastwood, Spike Lee, Steven Spielberg, Steven Soderbergh, and Terry Gilliam....

This is like Andrew Dominik, Netflix and “Blonde” all over again. Except, what does A24 seriously have to lose here? Of course, I understand A24’s positioning in not wanting to release a three and a half hour long movie. However, they should just say fuck it, do it! It’ll be a movie event that’ll be buzzed about within the film dweeb community. We need Ari’s full, unabated, untouched vision to unfurl on-screen....

I’ve been saying this for a while now, but Aster’s film sounds like a monster of ambition. The film is said to be a black nightmarish comedy about a son, his mom and guilt. Phoenix’s character then goes on a Kafka-esque Journey after learning of the death of his mother. We already know Aster will not be releasing “Disappointment Blvd” this year, a 2023 bow, possibly at Cannes, is highly likely for this highly anticipated movie....

The film is scripted by the director and Kessen Tall. At TIFF it was picked up for a U.S. release by Cohen Media Group and Gaumont in France. DP Aymerick Pilarski will be part of the film, alongside composer Amine Bouhafa, and editor Nadia Ben Rachid. Expect a 2023 Cannes premiere. Over the last few weeks, I’ve been seeing some big name directors, Cannes regulars, starting to shoot new works, with what I would assume is, for many of them, the intent of premiering at Cannes....

And now, the latest marquee name you can add to that list is Charlie Kaufman. Yesterday, Netflix announced that Kaufman’s “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” will be released on September 4th. Written and directed by Kaufman, “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” is based on Ian Reid’s novel of the same name, and is being described as a psychological thriller about a young couple in an isolated farmhouse. “I was looking for something that somebody would let me direct and it’s easier to get something made if it’s based on a book, or a comic book, or a movie that’s already existed,” Kaufman told the Wall Street Journal....

This is the most Lynchian request. Of course, it was well worth the Cheeto investment since Lynch’s cameo is the highlight of the movie (along with Judd Hirsch’s scenes). Variety admitted in February that Lynch’s “role remained a closely guarded secret,” which is odd since the other roles in the film had been notably cast and announced without secrecy. There have been many stories of a young Spielberg sneaking onto film sets and meeting legends of the era....
