Amidst the great Venice lineup announcement today comes a bombshell of speculation courtesy of Deadline. Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” will not be released in 2023, they say. Instead, it is eyeing a world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next May. What?! There was a rumor that 2023 might be an option for Scorsese’s film, then I was told December was the aim and that a marketing campaign was ready to go for the film....

Safe for the Netflix films, all of which were greeted with positive notices, the stuff Cannes head Thierry Fremaux rejected this year turned out to be duds on the festival circuit. All the aforementioned films were greeted with lackluster reviews at Venice. All except Jacques Audiard’s “The Sisters Brothers,” a western that has been getting great reviews and seems, based on today’s news, to have probably been probably rejected by Fremaux....

Upon first viewing, “Little Women” is somewhat successful in its passionate and energetic re-telling of Alcott’s novel. You can’t help but respect it. A major issue I had was its first half being a bit of a mess — it takes 70 or so minutes to really get you going and involved in its story. The whole thing is oddly structured in a distracting non-linear fashion. You get all sorts of timelines intertwined to the point of ad nauseum....

Romain Gavras’ “Athena” was not eligible since it is a Netflix production and won’t be released in French theaters. Otherwise, that could have been a major contender. Coppola is funding the film with his own money, so he can basically do whatever the hell he wants. That means the main cast will be composed of Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, Shia LaBeouf, Jason Schwartzman, Dustin Hoffman, Kathryn Hunter, Aubrey Plaza and James Remar. I was scrolling through this year’s Cesars contenders and, my God, what an abundance of riches we had from France this past year. “Titane,” “Petite Maman,” “Happening,” “Benedetta,” “Annette,” “Bergman Island,” “France,” “Onoda,” “Lost Illusions,” “The Restless,” and “Vortex.” If you haven’t caught up with many of these films, I highly recommend that you do. Forget the fact that the top prize-winners at Venice and Cannes were films directed by French female directors, but it’s also the films that didn’t win that impress as well....

The unusual love story Tilda Swinton‘s English writer and Idris Elba‘s romantic Djinn does strike a few nice chords, but Miller decides to concentrate the bulk of his movie on the Djinn’s century-spanning history, which has no tension or surprising elements to it. During the last 20 minutes though, Miller decides to concentrate on the sudden romance between Djinn and writer. It’s actually quite poignant; both characters never truly found love but realize they might be meant for each other....

Although we know Baumbach as a director, he has written screenplays for both Wes Anderson (“The Life Aquatic,” “The Fantastic Mr. Fox”) and, of course, himself (“Frances Ha,” “The Squid and the Whale,” “Greenberg”). Consider me shocked, SHOCKED, by this cancelation. No, but seriously, it was a foreigner conclusion that if the Sundance Film Festival would indeed occur this year then it would very well be the superspreader event of the winter. The decision by the festival to go completely virtual comes 15 days before Sundance’s opening night. They had originally set forth restrictions for attendees such as reduced screening capacities, mandatory triple vaccination and free testing....

Despite winning Best Picture and gaining a reputation as a classic, IndieWire’s Eric Kohn wants to hear none of that. His Forrest Gump takedown basically pisses on the legacy of this Robert Zemeckis-Tom Hanks film by implying a direct connection to conservatism and all but saying that ‘Gumpism,’ well, it’s actually another form of ‘Trump-ism.’ However, the entire Kohn write-up feels like further proof of intolerance stemming from a “progressive mindset” than really a credible dissection of the movie’s intolerance — if anything, ‘Gump’ is a film which promotes the idea of “getting along” and compromise....

The latest Peele joint, this one titled “Nope,” Looks like an alien invasion movie, you can even see one in the trailer or at least that’s what I thought it was.
