“We are in a major moment of disruption,” Russo said. “The two-hour film has had a great run for about 100 years but it’s become a very predictive format. “John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum” begins a few seconds after the previous installment. Wick did get an hour long headstart from boss Winston, the head of the film’s ingeniously-created intelligence community. That hour doesn’t do much, though, as once that clock hits its 60th minute, a blaze of handguns, infinite bullets, and, most importantly, head shots come to us like a furious freight train. With a $14 million bounty on his head, Wick needs to find a way to turn over the Ex-Communicado title which has been stamped on his tuchus....

The idea that we can modernize familiar narrative tropes is something that Hollywood always strives in achieving. After all, why change a formula that has been working so well, and making money, on audiences since the beginning of time when you could just freshen it up for contemporary audiences, whose sensibilities, let’s be frank haven’t changed all that much. Please keep in mind that in the millions of years the homosapien has lived on this planet, their DNA has barely changed, nor has their way of responding to triggers which prompt the usual emotional reactions....

Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” has a New York couple going through separation with their young son in the middle of the custody battle. Comparisons to Robert Benton’s “Kramer vs Kramer” are inevitable, even if Baumbach’s film, a tender, touching and heartfelt statement, does try to break out from the mold created by Pollack’s masterpiece. Nicole (Scarlett Johansson) and Charlie (Adam Driver) are a married couple who want an amicable split, even going to divorce counseling, but things don’t go as planned....

“The silver lining for me is the fact that an artful and completely plotless film such as Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma” is the Best Picture frontrunner. A film that, if it wins the top prize on February 24th, will have most mainstream moviegoers scratching their heads in total and utter confusion. This would have surely never happened in any other decade. You can feel the influence of the great neorealist filmmakers like Vittorio de Sica and Roberto Rossellini all over this film, which justifiably leads me to believe that a win by “Roma” would be akin to an “Umberto D” or “La Strada” winning a Best Picture Oscar back in the ’50s....

That’s about it for ‘No Way Home,’ number three is as good as it gets, as it will be damn-near impossible to catch “Avengers: Endgame” at #2 ($858 million). In case you’re wondering, the highest-grossing movie of all-time is “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which garnered an astounding $936 million in late 2017 and early 2018. Back to Spidey, what a story this has been, especially with all the doom and gloom articles we’ve been reading these last two years spelling the end of the theatrical experience....

Kotlyarenko’s filmmaking relies on the technical, as his main character uses cell-phone cameras and GoPros in his Uber-like rideshare car by terrorizing his riders in deviously original ways. Of course, the style of directing isn’t anything new, 21st-century filmmaking has delivered narratives told through devices such as phones, computer screens, and security cameras in the past — the best example being Aneesh Chaganty’s inventive neo-noir “Searching.” “Spree” is meant to be experienced as a terrorizing ride, one which has us emotionally removed from main character and anti-hero Kurt (Joe Keery of “Stranger Things”)....
